Overview

The AI Safety Atlas is an open textbook on AI safety by CeSIA, the French Center for AI Safety. Since reading it in the beginning of 2026 I’ve helped make the user experience better:

  • Whilst reading it I happened to be in Paris and met a few people from CeSIA, which let me talk to them about it and what I think would be nice to have, like a good audio version - soon after there was an audio version! And then I talked to them about what seemed to work well with it and what didn’t, which let to further improvements. But also, it made me feel more personally connected to it.
  • One thing that had bothered me when reading it was that it was difficult to go back and forth between reading and listening, so I ended up working on a version that syncs the spoken words to the current position in the text and allows the user to click anywhere in the text to make the audio jump to that position. This allows both read-along (listening and reading at the same time), as well as seemless switching, e.g. when having to leave home for an appointment, or when leaving the subway.
  • I also always wanted to have a quiz that lets you test whether you understood all the important parts of the atlas or not.

Where it stands

  • The read-along feature is shipped and live on on the official atlas page.
  • The quiz is still in development and honestly on hold right now - I’m not happy with that, but I have to focus on other things first.
